Flexi cap funds are the best category for most retail investors — no restriction on market cap allocation, giving fund managers flexibility to move between large, mid, and small caps based on opportunities.
1. Consistency: Check if fund has been in top 25% of category for at least 5 of last 7 years. One-year performance means nothing.
2. Downside protection: How much did the fund fall in 2020 COVID crash and 2022 correction? Good funds fall less than index.
3. Fund manager stability: Has the same fund manager been managing for 5+ years? Manager change = performance change risk.
4. Expense ratio: Direct plan should be under 0.8%. Avoid any fund above 1% TER in direct plan.
5. AUM size: Above ₹5,000 crore preferred for liquidity. Very large AUM (₹50,000+ Cr) may limit small cap exposure.
